Billy Gordon ‘unmoved’ on lockouts, KAP ‘unconvinced’

Then he was Labor’s pariah, facing domestic violence allegations, the revelation of an undisclosed sealed criminal history and the potential to bring down the Palaszczuk Government before it even began.

With police investigations into the historical domestic violence allegations and a later sexting scandal ending with no charges, the now independent MP could be Labor’s saviour as it seeks his support for its hallmark alcohol-fuelled violence laws, legislation it has staked a lot of political capital on, if not reputation.

But as of Monday night, the Cook MP said he was “unmoved” by the Premier and Attorney-General’s last ditch appeal for his support, having indicated since last year he would not support the laws.

Mr Gordon declined to be interviewed as he left the meeting but did reveal he had not changed his mind with the single word reply.

The Katter MPs were similarly unconvinced as they left their meeting earlier in the day.

If all three can’t overcome their doubts, that leaves the government one short of the majority it needs to pass the legislation, which would see a 3am last drinks with a 1am lockout in entertainment precincts and 2am last drinks everywhere else, and the Palaszczuk Government handed its biggest defeat yet in the hung parliament.

The debate is scheduled for Tuesday but is expected to run until Wednesday with most of the 89 members of Parliament expected to speak on the legislation.

But it’s just three speeches the government will be paying attention to, with the three most powerful MPs in the Queensland parliament having promised nothing more than to think on it.
