Cole has been around the block

PETER COLE is one of those blokes that is not satisfied with doing just one thing. Cole’s tennis academy sees him helping locals with their overhead lobs, his role as a solo acoustic solo music artist has him singing and playing for people all over the region and his favourite role that of father and soon to be husband, fills his days with joy. CRAIG THOMSON reports…

Peter Cole was born and raised in Glen Innes and remembers playing all types of sports as a child but distinctly remembers getting into tennis at the age of six.

“I can still remember playing at Bourke Street, I had a little green racquet and my parents realised when I made a rep squad that I had some talent,” he said.

“I was lucky to have parents like them they took me everywhere and when I started playing in a rep team and we went to a tournament every weekend, that’s when I thought I could make a go of tennis.

“When I was 15 I got to state level of tennis, but then I got into snooker.”

Cole made it to the Australian open level in snooker and says he feels he is more naturally talented at that sport than any other.

“I got to the Australian open and I took a frame of the world champion, which was pretty good,” he said.

“I went all over Australia playing snooker and in was club champion in Glen Innes for many years.”

Due to his work as an early childhood teacher Cole has an affinity with young sports people and that is what drew Cole back into tennis coaching a little over a year ago.

“We have over 270 members at the academies we have here and in Guyra and we see lots of potential with some really good tennis players coming up, “he said.

“I want to get a good number of those into a state squad and I have a passion for helping juniors, just to see their smiling face when they know they have achieved something good makes everything worthwhile.”

Coles other passion is music.

“I just started to play for kids when I was a teacher and I found I really enjoyed it, so I got into learning a repertoire and started playing for adults,” he said.

“One of my mates encouraged me to take it further and now I am almost fully booked for the year, going to pubs around the region playing covers and some originals solo acoustic with backing tracks.

“My next goal is to work a bit more on my original music.”

However, the most important thing in Cole’s life is his future wife and children and he feels they are what drive him to achieve.

“My two little girls are my biggest achievement and my fiancé and I plan our whole lives around them.

“My business is family run and I work hard and keep busy so I can provide a better future for them, nothing is too much if it is for them.

“Sunday’s is family time and we do whatever the girls want to do on that day, my fiancé’ and I make sure that they are our priority and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
