Energy deal is ‘nonsense’

Current Minister for Energy, Matthew Groom, announced on February 4 a “commercial agreement between Hydro Tasmania and Bell Bay Aluminium on energy consumption . . . (which) will see Bell Bay Aluminium temporarily reduce energy consumption by . . . 32 to 40MW for a period of up to five months.”

While the current circumstance makes this power rationing necessary, no one should underestimate the negative reputational impact on Tasmania as a destination for investment. This is third world nonsense in one of the wealthiest nations on earth.

So what is the likely effect of this damaging and humiliating step? In five months, perhaps 1 to 1.5 per cent more water in the dams.

If Westminster ministerial responsibility has any meaning left in Tasmania, then the argument for the minister keeping his job is now surely tenuous at best.
