Picture: Ellie-Marie WattsFINGAL Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s futurelooks bright if its nippers’ strong performance at carnivals such as the recent Hunter Branch Championship continues.

For a second yearthe Fingal club hosted the championship event which saw nippers from 12 clubs compete in surf and beach competitions.

The Fingal Beach club had 46 nipperscompete in the championship, held February 6 and 7, who cameaway with 32 medals –12 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze.

“We’re so stoked for the kids,” Ellie Roberts, carnival coordinator for the Fingal club, said.“We aren’t a big club, we don’t have the numbers other clubs have. For our kids to make the finals 88 times is such a huge achievement.”

Coach of the club’s 200nippers, Clint Brown, said it was “rewarding” to see the children’s hard work pay off.

The club had standout performers in all age groups, from under eight to under 13, plus in the four-round Newcastle Permanent Surf Series.

In the under 11s, Oscar Roberts, 10, placed second in the swim, sprint and Ironman and third in board while Brady Stewart, 11, placed second in board.

The male under 11 team placed first in the board and Cameron relays andsecond in the swim and sprint.

Roberts and Stewart came first in the board rescue while Will Clarke, 11, and Boadie Parker, 11, placed third.

The club also won the all age beach sprint.
