Glenfinnan muscles its way to $1120 ave

Marcus Bush, Yass, John and Anna Hayes, Glenfinnan White Suffolks, Young, and Mr Bush’s $1300 ram.GOOD carcase shape and performance gave buyers at the Hayes family’s Glenfinnan White Suffolk stud, Young, the confidence to bid to $1900 and push the average to $1120 last Friday where 76 from the 81 rams offered were sold.

The Glenfinnan rams are offered at seven months old, which givesbuyers an extra year of service, said vendors John and Anna Hayes.

The sale topper,Glenfinnan 299,was by home-bred sire Glenfinnan 140075 and sold to the Shannon family, Talmo Pastoral, “Talmo”, Bookham, as part of a draft of 13 rams to average $1265.It had a Carcase Plus Index of 185.53 and a 2020 Index of111.46.

Chris, Margo, Barbara and James Shannon runMerinos and join their surplus ewes to terminal sires, with the resulting lambssold in store condition in late November.The Shannons also paid equal second top of $1800 for Glenfinnan 99, a son of Glenfinnan 204.

Marcus Bush, Boambola Pastoral Company, Yass, put together the largestdraft, totalling 12 rams to top at$1300 and average $1000.AGlenfinnan client ofeight years, Mr Bush uses the rams in his flock of 5500 Merino ewes, 2500 of which are joined to terminal sires.

Brundah Pastoral Company, Binalong, took three rams at $1700 as part ofa draft of six to average $1617.

Other volume buyers were James Watson, “South Greenbank”, Young, who took six to average $1000; Richard Page, Stoneridge Pastoral Company, Young, bought five to average $1160, and Hanab Pty Ltd, Bookham, averaged four at $1287, includingGlenfinnan 89, by Farrer 130253, for equal second top price of $1800.

One ram also sold to West Australian buyer Garry Page, Jocklor stud, trading asBittleyonge Farm,Pingelly.On a visit to NSW last year Glenfinnan was suggested as worth a lookand his purchase was made on the back of that recommendation. At $1600, the ram will be used in his stud.

The sale was conducted by Butt Livestock and Property, Yass, with Tim Drum, Riverina Livestock Agents, Wagga Wagga, as auctioneer.
