Huge beef cattle program for Wingham Show

Its almost show time and chief beef cattle stewards, Denis and Denise McKinnon, have another huge program lined up for beef cattle enthusiasts, exhibitors and junior beef cattle competitors for the forthcoming 2016 Wingham Show.

While the show runs over three days from Friday, March 4 to Sunday, March 6, beef cattle judging will commence at 8.30am Saturday, March 5.

“Once again our loyal dedicated sponsors have committed cash prizes and trophies valued at $2,100, proving that if you are prepared to work hard and stage a professional event, cattle exhibitors, junior competitors, our sponsors and all our volunteers come together to promote a truly rural agricultural show event,” Denis said.

“Wingham Show is traditionally used as a final “hit out” by those who are either exhibiting their cattle or competing in junior events at the forthcoming Royal Easter Show and once again we have been selected to stage the Zone Junior Beef Paraders qualifying final with those selected going on to compete at the Royal State Finals.

“It is well known and widely recognized that Wingham Show Society have a proud record of fostering and encouraging our junior beef cattle enthusiasts. At last year’s show a record 110 juniors, from Kempsey in the North to the Hunter in the South, competed in judging, parading and herdspersons events.”

This year three of previous Junior Judging Champions have accepted invitations as associate judges, assisting and learning from the senior judges.

They are Rachel Relf who has competed her Ag degree and presently has a traineeship with Wingham Beef Exports, Jonty Hemmingway who is presently studying for her Ag degree and is also employed by Wingham Beef Exports and 2015 Junior Beef Cattle Judging Champion and Wingham High School student Hayley Brood.

A section for commercial led cattle, unregistered pure bred and/or cross bred females and bulls, has been added to this year’s program Denis explained.

“The idea being that it gives those who are contemplating breeding and exhibiting stud cattle in the future, the opportunity to try their hand initially at preparation and showing,” he said.
