Offord wins ski cross silver medal at youth games

A crash in late January during preparation for Lillehammer 2016 had left the 17-year-oldconcussed,badly disruptingher preparation.

But the Helensburgh skier brushed aside the setback to win a silver medal in the ski cross event on theHafjell Olympic Slopeon Tuesday morning (AEDT).

Offord said she was thrilled tofinishsecond behind the Swiss gold medalist.

“I can’t believe it, I am over the moon,” she said.

“I had a bit of a rough run leading in to Lillehammer 2016 and had a bit of a crash today but it was all good.”

Offord, who was named after Olympic bronze medalist and Australia’s most successful alpine skier Zali Steggall,was the fastest out of the gatesbut was edged out of first place in the final stages.

“It was a pretty good final,” she said.

“I had the girl at the start and she is a good skier as well, one of the top Swiss girls.

“It was a really good race, I worked hard and came away with second.”

The feat followed on from thesilver medal won by Woronora Heights snowboarder Emily Arthur in the half pipe on Monday morning (AEDT).

Australiahas now won four medals at the games, making it the most successful winter youth Olympics campaign in its history.
