Businessmen Travis Crowther and Gary Murray launched their campaigns on Monday saying they areboth are running for councillor and neither are aligned with a political party.

Mr Crowther is a born-and-bred Mount Isan, husband and father of three boys who runs his own business and is the current president of Commerce North West Commerce (CNW).

He said he has nominated for council because it was the right time to make a difference.

“Having worked tirelessly with CNWfor the last four years, I believe my experienceand contacts along with my vision can benefit the entire community of Mount Isa,” Mr Crowther said.

Mr Crowther said the city has been stagnating for the last eight years.

“There’s a lot of opportunities out there andI’d like to be able to kick start the town and get it going,” he said.

Mr Crowther said there was too much party politics in council.

‘We need a team that really just works for the town, working closely with CNW, MITEZ and other regional councils,” he said.

Gary Murray said he had lived in Mount Isa since 1995 and isheavily involved in tourism and services businesses in the area including Airside Logistics, Outback Drones and Adels Grove.

He said he wasrunning for council because he could no longer sit back and toleratehollow promises which had lasted eight years.

“The apathy, the lip service is there to the point where I need to stand up and do something,” Mr Murray said.

“I believe I have a considerable amount of experience and know how this city works and I know how to make it better.”

Mr Murray said 40,000 tourists came to Mount Isa each year and we didn’t look after them.

“They have money to spend, they want to know about Mount Isa but we don’t provide it,” he said.

Mr Murray said he would stand back from businessif elected while Mr Crowther said he would resign from CNWif elected.
