The Sydney-based management and public policy consultant combines his work with speaking engagements around the country, revealing his story of “overcoming adversity with resilience”. Life threw down the gauntlet to Mr Betar from the very beginning, born 10 weeks’ premature, diagnosed with cerebral palsy and unable to walk unaided until the age of 12.

He was the first member of his family to finish high school, and has since completed four university degrees, with “Oxford graduate” on his impressive resume. Mr Betar spoke to more than 1000 students and staff at Calrossy, saying the school was a good fit for his message, given one of its key values was resilience.

“I let them know … if your world feels like it’s falling apart, if nothing else, you can rely on that internal resilience – it’s in all of us,” he said.

“You just have to persevere.”

Mr Betar said everyone had their own battles, but it was important to maintain perspective.

“If I could go back and speak to that boy during my childhood, I would tell him it’s all going to be okay,” he said.

“I’m quite happy with where I am now and while it may be hard at the time, sometimes it’s the battles we face that shape who we become and make us stronger.”

Mr Betar’s visit also coincided with Calrossy’s leadership induction service, where for the first time in the school’s history the elected student leaders of the secondary girls, boys and primary campuses received their badges at the same time and in front of the whole school.
