NSW Koori’s captain William Lockwood junior played alongside local boys Riley Sines and Kevin Kennedy who were selected amongst another 20 boys as the best Indigenous players in the U16 rugby league competition.

U16s Indigenous All Stars chairman of selectors Scott Mieni said it was a great week in the lead-up before the game and believes the team is one of the best to ever play.

“It was an amazing game with some big hits and electrifying attack from both sides,” Mieni said.

“All through my coaching I have never been one to have a go at the referee but I thought we were on the worse side of a few decisions but then again in any game you can say that 50 per cent of the decisions went the other way,” Mieni said.

“Despite some poor decissions the boys were down 10-nil at one stage but they crawled back to 10-6 at half time and just after half time we scored another making it 10-all.

After the scores were locked together at 10-all a penalty goal to McKenzie Baker and a try to Treavon McGinness put Queensland in front 10 minutes from full-time.

Prop Svagelli’s try underneath the posts saw NSW draw level again with a chance to steal victory with a shot at penalty goal.

“However, with only 10 seconds to go on the clock the boys missed a goal right in front and the game to draw.”

Mieni said all of the Kempsey boys were selected for their skills on the field and dedication to the game but it was Lockwood’s game that has made him one of the best U16 players.

“This will be the second year that Lockwood has played for the All Stars as he has only got better and proven himself to be one of the best players,” Mieni said.

“William has always shown outstanding leadership and his ability is second to none and that is why he was selected to captain the side on the weekend.”
